benefits of LEARNING guitar

Or any musical instrument

People choose to learn guitar for so many reasons: academic achievement, creative outlet, hobby, to be able to perform and teach professionally, stress relief, or maybe just to be that cool one in a group who can strum out the songs everybody knows. The guitar is a great choice because it is a popular instrument, it’s portable, and you can make some pretty decent sounds relatively quickly. Learning guitar (or any musical instrument), has many benefits, beyond the obvious ones of playing and understanding music. As you learn, confidence and self esteem increase. Repetition of specifically designed technical exercises improves coordination and accuracy. Concentration and the ability to focus on one thing at a deeper level sharpens, as does memory because the brain gets familiar with making new connections during the learning process. Success is achieved through self-discipline and a slow but consistent approach – think like an athlete. Knowing how music works – understanding what works and what doesn’t, will open your music making world to endless creative possibilities.

Lessons are essential, even for advanced and professional players. We all get stuck on something! Usually, the same old licks and riffs, or a case of ‘theory-aphobia’. Finding the right tutor means finding someone who can unlock those issues with you and release you to be the creatively free and independent musician that you want to be.

what the students say...

"From knowing nearly nothing about music theory, Kit taught me everything I needed to know in understanding what is going on behind the music, it's application in my playing/writing and developing my ear. His insight on guitar has been extremely valuable to me and I know I wouldn't be the same guitarist if it wasn't for Kit. I couldn't recommend highly enough."

"Kit is technically brilliant and yet has the ability to put his pupil at ease. His theory and practical teaching is infinitely understandable and superbly structured allowing the pupil to develop outside the session as far as they would want to go. Kit is the only only tutor I would never hesitate to recommend to a day 1 guitarist or a pro looking to develop their craft. Yep, he is that good!"
Hans Wouters

"Kit instinctively knows what each individual student needs and instills the correct practice techniques to suit the students learning style. Methods and techniques from a wide range of genre keeps lessons interesting and fun. As a musician, I would not be where I am today with out the careful guidance and support of this lovely, top level guitar tutor. Highly recommended with a 5 star rating!..."

"I have been fortunate enough to receive lessons from Kit for over a decade. Kit is not only an amazing guitar player, but his passion to educate and pass on knowledge continues to inspire me. Kit helped me from being an absolute beginner to enabling me to perform multiple times on stage as a confident guitarist. I currently have virtual lessons from Kit abroad where I now reside in Vancouver. The experience has been amazing and I continue to want to pick up and learn more about the instrument everyday thanks for him. His understanding of music theory, musicianship and the experience within the industry is profound. Alongside this, his professionalism and will to go out of his own way to help and provide feedback is always very welcoming. I thank Kit for my love of the instrument and would recommend Kit to anyone at any level."

"Kit Grenon is great with beginners right through to the advanced. His ability to simplify theory is worth a lesson in itself. He taught me for 2 years and took me from a few steps up from beginner to being able to pass an NZQA level 6 diploma in music. I'll always be grateful for his compassion and skills."

"Not only is Kit an outstanding guitarist who is inspiring our son to be a great guitarist himself, he is also a great reader of students. He has always been adept at finding the right words and approaches to get the best out of our son and we are blown away by the enthusiasm he has created in a young boy's life. Best decision we have made for him - and the best decision he continues to make term after term. Well done Kit."

"...Kit really rocketed me to where I am today...With patience, he led me to learn and understand not only chords, scales and pentatonics with ease but how to position my fingers and compose myself as to let the music flow... He has an absolute talent for teaching what he has great passion in and would recommend to anyone wanting to begin or further their knowledge"

"When our son James needed a new guitar tutor who could take him to the next level, we were recommended Kit and even after the first lesion, we knew it was the right choice. James has been with Kit for 4 years and has developed immensely in that time - yet Kit has the skills and experience to continue to develop and challenge James. He still comes out of every weekly lesson with a smile on his face and says that Kit always makes things easier to understand and helps develop many important skills as a guitarist with ear training, sight reading and technique. For us, we noticed how Kit took time to understand James, what he wanted to achieve and what music he liked and tailored the lessons to suit – always giving him great songs to work on which has always kept his interest high. Kit has been the best thing for James and we couldn’t speak more highly of him."
